Railway Minister Reviews Empowerment Measures for Station Masters

The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw convened a review meeting with senior railway officials to discuss measures to empower Station Masters (SMs) and improve station management across Indian Railways (IR). Station Masters were described as critical to safe train operations, coordination among departments, passenger facilities and smooth functioning of stations. The meeting identified operational and administrative challenges faced by SMs and considered a framework to enhance their effectiveness and decision-making at station level.

Proposals reviewed included enhanced administrative and operational powers for SMs, improved career progression and greater access to higher management roles. Officials examined the need for additional SMs in multi-track busy sections and prioritised filling vacancies in the cadre to meet growing operational demands. Discussions encompassed greater financial delegations to enable quicker maintenance and local problem resolution, with the intention of improving passenger convenience and service delivery.

The review considered technology interventions such as a mobile app-based paperless working system and an integrated Station Management System to improve coordination among departments and speed resolution of passenger issues. Training and capacity building formed a major focus, with plans to upgrade methodologies using Virtual Reality (VR), simulators and modern training tools to prepare SMs for complex operations and emergency scenarios. Safety measures and improved equipment were examined, taking account of increased participation of women in frontline roles.

The initiatives aim to provide better manpower support, modern technology, enhanced training and greater decision-making authority at stations to build a more responsive and future-ready station management system for millions of passengers. Officials reviewed measures to create a motivating environment and clearer progression pathways to encourage retention and leadership development among SMs. The review is expected to guide implementation of reforms across the IR network.
