Tripunithura, Aluva And Alappuzha Stations To Get Premium Dining

The Thiruvananthapuram division of Indian Railways under Southern Railway has announced plans to introduce premium dine-in restaurants at Tripunithura railway station, Aluva railway station and Alappuzha railway station after a strong response to similar branded outlets at Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town. The initiative is presented as a response to rising passenger footfall and the strategic importance of these stations within Kerala's expanding rail network. Officials described the move as an effort to enhance passenger experience while meeting growing commuter demand at key transit points.

An auction for the premium branded outlet at Tripunithura has been scheduled for Tuesday, with authorities noting the station's role as a link between rail and metro networks and a proposed mini-hub project by the Tripunithura municipality. The concession is expected to support the station's evolution into a multimodal transport hub under that proposal. Officials said the initiative will seek partners capable of operating city-level dining spaces within station precincts.

The auction for the outlet at Aluva has been set for Thursday, reflecting anticipated demand driven by the station's connectivity to rail services and KSRTC bus routes. Authorities anticipate strong commuter uptake given Aluva's status as one of the region's busiest stations. The concession model aims to provide hygienic, high-quality food options to reduce passenger inconvenience.

At Alappuzha, the proposed restaurant will concentrate on premium seafood and Kerala cuisine, with the aim of offering travellers an authentic local dining experience on the platform to cater to tourism-driven traffic. The design intends to blend regional culinary identity with hygiene standards equivalent to urban outlets. Planners expect the facility to complement broader station infrastructure upgrades.

Local residents' associations welcomed the development as an overdue improvement in commuter facilities and said it would reduce the need for passengers to step outside stations for meals. Tripunithura currently generates a monthly revenue of over Rs. 0.1 million (mn), underlining the station's economic significance and supporting the shift to premium services. The Thiruvananthapuram division framed the scheme as an attempt to make waiting time more comfortable by partnering with branded food operators.
