GMDA Starts Rs 1.91 Billion Behrampur Sewage Project

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated construction of a Rs 1.91 billion sewage infrastructure project in Behrampur, nearly three years after its approval.

The project, designed to manage the increasing waste load from Gurugram’s fast-developing sectors, includes a 100 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP) and a 400 MLD main pumping station.

The new STP will feature a biogas-based power generation unit to help offset operational costs, and construction is expected to be completed within two years.

At present, only 30 per cent of Behrampur’s existing 170 MLD treatment capacity meets tertiary treatment standards. To enhance water quality and reuse potential, the existing 120 MLD plant will also be upgraded to reduce Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels from 30 mg/L to 10 mg/L, enabling treated water to be reused in agriculture, construction, and groundwater recharge.

With rapid urbanisation along the Southern Peripheral Road and Golf Course Extension, Gurugram’s wastewater systems have been under severe strain. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns over open sewage dumping and incomplete drainage connectivity, prompting the authority to expedite completion of the city’s network.

Officials stated that the Behrampur project will significantly improve the city’s sewage management capacity, aligning with GMDA’s broader plan to ensure 100 per cent wastewater treatment and reuse across Gurugram.
