IGL Ramps Up PNG Push in Delhi-NCR, Targets 5,000 Daily Connections

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has accelerated its campaign to expand piped natural gas (PNG) connections across the Delhi-NCR region and is targeting 5,000 daily new connections amid mounting pressure on liquefied petroleum gas distribution. The company has prioritised rapid deployment to provide an alternative to cylinder supply and to meet rising household and commercial demand for cleaner fuels. The strategy targets both residential and commercial customers across urban and suburban districts.

Operational measures include scaling up installation teams, fast-tracking pipeline extensions and streamlining metering and safety certification to reduce lead times for new customers. IGL is coordinating with local authorities and contractor networks to optimise workflows and ensure regulatory compliance while keeping safety as the principal consideration. The firm intends to leverage existing infrastructure where feasible to accelerate roll-out without compromising service standards. It has outlined processes for workforce mobilisation and quality assurance to maintain operational discipline.

Greater access to piped natural gas is expected to alleviate pressure on LPG supplies by offering households a continuous fuel source that eliminates frequent cylinder deliveries. The transition is likely to deliver cost stability for regular users and to reduce logistical burdens for distributors during peak demand periods. Environmental benefits are anticipated as more consumers migrate from bottled fuels to a lower emission option. Analysts view the move as timely given seasonal peaks in cooking fuel demand and distribution challenges.

The expansion aligns with wider policy objectives to promote a gas-based economy and to enhance urban energy security by diversifying fuel sources. IGL will monitor uptake data closely and adjust operational cadence in response to demand patterns and supply constraints. Stakeholders expect the initiative to ease short-term supply challenges while supporting longer term shifts towards cleaner energy. Coordination with supply partners will be important to sustain volumes as the programme scales.
