Guwahati Citizens Seek Stronger CCTV Surveillance

Guwahati residents have urged authorities to strengthen CCTV surveillance through the Smart City integrated command, control and communication centre to tackle traffic violations and improve public sanitation. The call follows mounting concern about road safety and littering in key urban areas, where traffic congestion often compounds waste management challenges. Local civic groups have pressed for better monitoring and timely action by enforcement agencies and municipal teams.

The Smart City integrated command, control and communication centre coordinates camera feeds and aids rapid response to incidents across the city and its suburbs. Citizens said expanded coverage should prioritise accident prone junctions and public toilets to address safety and sanitation simultaneously, and recommended clear signage and lighting near monitored locations. Municipal officials have been asked to map existing devices and propose upgrades within a clear timeframe and to allocate staff for round the clock oversight.

In separate developments the border security force director general visited the site where an aide of a regional political leader was murdered, underscoring security concerns that have prompted local mobilising on safety. The election commission lifted the model code of conduct after assembly poll results while noting that the code would continue to apply in Falta, West Bengal where contests remain unresolved. The central government has announced plans to expand the NIPUN literacy mission to class five as part of broader educational reforms aimed at strengthening foundational skills.
