New Suburban Station Planned Between Thane And Mulund

Travelling on Mumbai's local trains between Thane and Mulund is among the most stressful parts of the daily commute for many residents, with peak services often packed to the point that boarding safely becomes arduous. The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has granted in-principle approval for construction of a new suburban station on the Central Railway main line between Thane and Mulund. The decision was communicated to the Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and is intended to strengthen suburban rail connectivity.

The new halt is expected to ease congestion on one of the most crowded stretches of the Mumbai Suburban Railway by providing an additional boarding and deboarding point. Planners anticipate that distributing passengers more evenly across stations will relieve pressure on existing terminals and improve passenger flow on trains. The facility is designed to enhance accessibility for nearby neighbourhoods and to integrate with existing local transit links. Designs will consider accessibility features and commuter circulation patterns.

Regular commuters stand to gain reduced peak-hour crowding and shorter access times, which should make daily journeys less stressful and more predictable. By offering more convenient boarding options, the station is expected to shorten walking distances for residents and lower reliance on a few heavily used stations. Operational benefits could include smoother boarding processes and improved safety during busy periods. Services will be monitored continuously.

Implementation will require detailed engineering studies, coordination between Central Railway and state authorities, and necessary clearances before construction can commence. The project is positioned as a targeted intervention to balance passenger loads and improve commuter convenience without altering mainline services. Public consultations and traffic studies will inform station design and passenger amenities. Authorities will need to publish schedules and operational plans as the scheme moves into the execution phase.
