Telangana to receive 12 awards for sanitation and waste management

Telangana has been designated one of the country's top two performing states, winning awards in 12 categories as part of the Swachh Survekshan 2021, Garbage Free City Rating 2021, and Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge.

In its first-of-its-kind achievement, the state had won a dozen awards in various categories.

The awards will be presented by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Swachh Amrit Mahotsav, which will be held on November 20 at Vignan Bhavan in New Delhi by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Telangana State's Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have won 12 awards in various categories for improving overall sanitation, citizen awareness, and waste management among 4,300 cities and towns.

In the category of metropolitan cities, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has won the award for Garbage Free City Rating 2021.

Karimnagar Municipal Corporation will receive the Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge, a first-of-its-kind challenge aimed at the safety and well-being of sanitation workers by promoting mechanised cleaning, under the less than three lakh population category.

GHMC, Nizampet Municipal Corporation, Siricilla, Siddipet, Nizampet, Ibrahimpatnam, Ghatkesar, Kosgi, Husnabad, and Secunderabad Cantonment are among the ULBs that will receive awards under Swachh Surveykshan 2021.

Over the last seven years, the State has received numerous awards in a variety of categories. Approximately 110 of 139 ULBs have achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status as a result of the Pattana Pragathi program's successful implementation over the last two years.

The city of GHMC has been designated as a Water Plus City. Telangana leads the way in terms of loan distribution to street vendors, with a 100% success rate through the Pradhan Mantri Sva Nidhi programme.

It has been the forerunner in planning and establishing Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs), with 12 completed, 15 nearing completion, 46 in the works, and six in the tendering process to help prevent water pollution.
